The final walkthrough is an opportunity to understand the completed work and record anything that still needs attention. Preparing for it helps shift the conversation from a general impression of the home to a useful review of the agreed scope and how the new spaces operate.
Review the project scope before the appointment
Bring the current scope, approved changes and any notes collected during construction. Organize questions by room so the walkthrough follows a practical route. Distinguish a concern about completed work from a new idea that was not part of the project.
Check the details you will use every day: doors and drawers, lighting controls, fixtures, storage and room transitions. Ask for an explanation of unfamiliar features rather than assuming they operate in the same way as the items they replaced.
Record remaining items clearly
A useful list identifies the location, the observation and the next action. “Kitchen drawer beside the range needs review” is more actionable than “cabinet issue.” Photographs can help clarify a concern when paired with a description.
Discuss who will coordinate follow-up and how completion will be confirmed. Avoid relying on several separate verbal lists held by different people. The agreed record should make it clear which items remain open.
Ask about care and operating information
Request the information available for installed products and materials, including manufacturer instructions where applicable. Natural stone, wood, tile and specialty finishes may have different care needs. Follow the guidance relevant to the actual product rather than a general cleaning recommendation.
Ask where important controls and service access points are located. Retain product information and selection records together so future maintenance or replacement decisions are easier to make. Specific warranty terms should be reviewed in the relevant written documents.
Allow the home to become familiar
Some questions arise only when you begin using the space. Keep a concise record and use the agreed contact process to raise them. Separate operational questions from requests for additional work so each can be addressed appropriately.
Ask BST Design & Build during planning what the walkthrough, handover and follow-up arrangements will include for your scope. Knowing how the project concludes helps you understand the entire process before construction begins.
