There is no single price that reliably describes a bathroom remodel in Maryland. A powder room with fixtures staying in place is a different project from a primary bathroom with a revised layout and custom shower. A useful budget begins with a defined scope and an assessment of the existing room.
Define What the Estimate Includes
Describe the room’s size, the fixtures you want to replace and the changes you are considering. Separate finish replacement from layout changes. Moving a shower, altering walls or creating a larger bathroom introduces questions that cannot be answered by the cost of tile alone.
Ask for a scope that identifies demolition, construction, plumbing and electrical work, surface preparation, waterproofing, fixtures, cabinetry, finishes and project coordination where applicable. Identify design, approvals and disposal responsibilities rather than assuming they are included.

Understand the Main Cost Drivers
- Layout: retaining existing positions and relocating fixtures involve different work.
- Shower design: dimensions, enclosure, tile layout, drainage and selected fittings shape the scope.
- Cabinetry: storage configuration, size, construction and finish influence the selection.
- Materials: fabrication, edge details, installation pattern and preparation matter alongside purchase price.
- Existing conditions: concealed damage or unsuitable construction may require work beyond the visible finishes.
For example, two bathrooms with similar floor areas may differ substantially if one retains its arrangement and the other relocates plumbing and changes the shower. Compare the work described, not just room size.
Make Allowances Specific
An allowance should identify what it covers and how the final selection will be reconciled. Ask whether it includes only a product or also delivery, accessories, installation and related labor. A fixture price without its required components can give an incomplete impression of the eventual cost.
Choose representative products early enough to test the budget. You do not need every decorative detail decided at the first conversation, but the estimate should reflect the quality and complexity you actually want.

Keep a Separate Reserve for Unknowns
Discuss a contingency appropriate to the property and scope. Keep it distinct from money already allocated to upgrades. Ask how newly discovered conditions will be documented, priced and approved before additional work proceeds.
Local permit requirements depend on the address and work. Confirm the responsible authority and the project’s approval needs during planning; a price from another property is not a substitute for that review.
Bring the Right Information to Your Consultation
Prepare photographs, approximate dimensions, the property address and a short list of must-haves. Share an investment range that feels comfortable and identify where you are willing to make tradeoffs. Ask what information is still needed before a preliminary discussion can become a detailed proposal.
